Bandhavgarh National Park located in Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh is a popular wildlife sanctuary in India. The park derives its name from a prominent hillock of the area which is believed to have been used by Lakshman to keep a watch on Lanka.
About the Park
Bandhavgarh National Park is one of the major habitats of tiger breeding in the world. In fact, it is considered to have highest tiger density in the country. It is home to a wide variety of birds and insects. You can find over 250 species of birds alone in the park. Sambar, Nilgai and barking deer are amongst the wildlife found here. Besides, the place has a rich history of its own with legendary themes. Bandhavgarh’s beauty is displayed in the great cliffs and eroded rocks of the park too.
Places to see
Bandhavgarh Fort is one of the oldest forts in India and its origin cannot be traced. A trek to the fort goes through the middle of the jungle and is worth exploring.
For archeological interest, you must visit the Cave Point to explore archaeological remains which stand testimony to the rich history of the region.
Bari Gufa too is a place of historical interest.
For bird watching, you may head to Gopalpur inside the park itself.
You may spot herds of herbivores and carnivores at Mahaman Pond where these animals come to quench their thirst.
Bandhavgarh National Park is accessible from Jabalpur which is the nearest airport. After reaching Jabalpur you can reach Bandhavgarh located 200 km away by road in around 4 hours.
Safari in Bandhavgarh
There are 04 different zones of the national park from where you can enjoy the Jeep Safari Rides. The park is available to visitors from around October to June end.
- Morning Shift: 5:30 hrs to 11:00 hrs
- Afternoon Shift: 14:30 hrs to 19:00 hrs
Kindly note that the safari timings may vary depending upon the season during which you are travelling.
Things to keep in mind
- At Bandhavgarh afternoon shift of Jeep Safari remain closed for visitors on every Wednesday
- Morning & Afternoon both the shifts remain closed during Holi festival
- You are required to carry originals of your identity proofs which were used during safari reservation
