The twin villages of Bir-Billing are located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Known for its eco tourism and adventure travel, the area is famous for paraglding, trekking, hiking and camping. Of late, the region has also gaining popularity amidst foreign travellers interested in philosophy and meditation.
One of the biggest crowd pullers in the region is Paragliding. Considered as one of the best aero-sports sites in the world with some paragliding championships being held here, this site is famous amongst the professionals as well. The takeoff site Billing is at a height of around 2600 metres above sea level. The drive up is quite adventurous with the road being just broad enough to accommodate one vehicle and a valley on both sides. Paragliding in Kangra valley offers magnificent valleys of the Dhauladhar range. As they circle down, you can also see beautiful views of tea plantations at the Billing valley. Amateurs can opt for tandem paragliding where a guide will accompany them during their flight. Landing takes place at Bir, located in the foothills of the Himalayas.

One can also go for trekking and camping in the region or go for a long stroll in the tea gardens of Chowgan. Also, a couple of hours away is the town of Dharamshala which is known for His Holiness, The Dalai Lama’s temple. Dharamshala is also known for its lively Tibetan culture. One can sense it in the numerous vibrant Tibetan cafes in the lanes and colorful Tibetan flags hanging everywhere.
Tips to keep in mind
- Climate gets colder and windy as you drive up the hill. It is advised to carry your windcheaters and jackets.
- The takeoff site has no other facilities except a small snack store. There is no restroom facility too.
- Paragliding is weather dependent. This activity needs clear skies so it is advised to avoid cloudy days for better chances of paragliding.
